“The Dessert Table: 100 Joyful Jewish Sweets” by Leah Koenig (Sep 1, 2026)

Just in time for the High Holidays (in 2026, Rosh Hashanah takes place September 11-13, and Yom Kippur is September 20-21) here comes a delightful Jewish dessert baking cookbook from the author of “Portico,” “Modern Jewish Cooking” and several other Jewish cookbooks.

The author draws from a 2000 year old tradition of baking desserts, including recipes gleaned from Venice, Syria, and Curaçao; Hungary and Poland; and bakeries throughout the diaspora in the US. Of course, many of the recipes involve honey, pomegranates and other important symbols of Jewish culinary tradition.

Five Tastes: Delicious Recipes for Chinese Flavors, by Fuchsia Dunlop (Oct 20, 2026)

Fuchsia introduces her cookbook as “It’s about the joy of using the Chinese arts of flavour – and the classic ‘five tastes’, sour, bitter, sweet, pungent and salty – to make delicious, nourishing food at home, wherever you may be and with whatever ingredients you may have to hand.” I love cookbooks that help you find tasty things in your pantry to use, and I’m excited to cook more Chinese foods at home.

“Sitting the Month: Postpartum Recipes for Rest & Recovery,” by Clarissa Wei with Stella Wang (Sep 15, 2026)

I first heard of the Chinese tradition of “sitting the month” from my next door neighbor. She gave birth, and her mother sequestered her in the bedroom, feeding her special foods, caring for her and helping take care of the new granddaughter. This cookbook offers recipes for postpartum warming meals, healing herbs, and restorative foods and beverages, informed by Chinese medicine traditions. There are 88 recipes designed to guide and nurture new mothers back to health.
