The new baking cookbook I am the most excited about in 2026 is Cake Picnic! I am delighted by this concept and can’t wait to host cake picnics in each of the two cities I live in!
The publisher, Chronicle Books, gifted me an advance copy of this cake cookbook to preview.
“Cake Picnic: Recipes for the Love of Cake & Friends” is by Elisa Sunga, who created the Cake Picnic tour company. They host cake picnics in major cities. Tickets to a cake picnic tend to sell out in under a minute! Each participant must bring a cake that’s beautifully decorated, sitting on a cake board (not in an aluminum cake pan) and that falls within cake size requirements.
While most of us cookbook lovers would prefer to bake and bring our own homemade cakes, Cake Picnic allows you to bring one from a bakery if you like. However, how wonderful is it to be able to bring a cake made from a recipe in this lovely new cookbook?

As I expected, the cookbook includes info on pantry ingredients you’ll need in order to bake the cakes, plus kitchen tools you’ll need. The beginning offers techniques and baking strategies as well as cake decorating ideas specific to cakes that are going to be transported to a second location. There are storage guidelines, as the author recommends baking the cake the day before your picnic in order for flavors to meld nicely.
The cake picnic I want to host or attend the most is a Citrus cake picnic! With yellow and white cabana stripe umbrellas, tablecloths and yellow cake pedestals! That’s a dream of mine and I’m going to make it come true this summer thanks to this fabulous and fanciful new baking book.
The cookbook includes lots of guides, tips and a step by step process for planning, hosting and implementing a successful and fun Cake Picnic. There’s also a section of advice for people attending a Cake Picnic, including how to transport and store any cake leftovers.
