I wanted to let you know about an upcoming baking book for kids. It’s “Sweet & Salty!: King Arthur Baking Company’s Cookbook for Young Bakers,” coming out in September 2025 from Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers.
I buy most of my flour from King Arthur Baking Company, so I am extra excited to check this kids’ baking book out.
Thank you to NetGalley for gifting me an advance copy of this cookbook.
This baking book is divided into two chapters: Sweet, and Salty.
The cookbook begins with helpful sections called “Bakers, Start here!,” a page on “Tools of the Trade,” a pictorial review of typical baking pan sizes, and ten quick lessons for baking success.
In total, this baking book (designed for junior bakers aged eight and up) features over 85 recipes, divided into two sections, Sweet and then Salty. I’m really impressed how many recipes include step-by-step photos – so helpful!
Sweet recipes include chocolate cake, apple cake, strawberry cake, lemon pudding cake, pink lemonade cake, carrot snacking cake, a giant chocolate chip cookie, ice cream sandwiches, homemade graham crackers, doughnut muffins, banana split French toast, and caramel apple galettes (among many others).
The salty recipes section of this cookbook includes recipes for oatmeal maple sandwich bread, salt and squishy dinner rolls, Ranch Monkey Bread, a beautiful Sunflower Bread recipe, pita pockets, crunchy breadsticks, Pizza Party Buns, Fast Focaccia, Maple Bacon Biscuits, cornbread and more. As with the Sweet section, there are helpful tips and informative sidebars throughout.
There’s also a whole section on making your own frosting for cakes and cupcakes. Plus, there is also a helpful section with step-by-step photos on how to frost cakes.
This is meant to be an educational baking book, not just a collection of recipes. So, for example, the section about The Simplest Chocolate Cake recipe includes two photos of the cake, plus a sidebar on why the recipe calls for vinegar, and a sidebar explaining the difference between natural and Dutch Process cocoa.
I find the pictures lovely and helpful, the recipes well laid out and easy to follow with numbered steps, and the ingredients easy for young bakers to source. The recipes include both classic favorites kids would want to learn to make (such as cornbread) and inventive, fun creations like Spinach and Feta Pastry Pockets. This is a fabulous and enticing cookbook for young cooks and bakers, and I definitely recommend it for the young folks in your life.
